Christmas Memories
From Jimmie Harris, Children’s Homes
Houseparent:
. . .One year, a little girl in our care got a
dollhouse in a big cardboard box. For a week after Christmas, she played in
that box constantly and didn't pay any attention to the dollhouse spread all
over the living room.
. . .We had a boy named Thomas whose first
Christmas with us was soon after he had been taken from his mother. He was
so paranoid that people would steal his stuff that he hid his clothes under
the mattress on his bed so he could protect them at night. For his first
Christmas with us, Thomas got a bike, a pair of pants and a pair of tennis
shoes. He refused to take the bike outside for fear that someone would steal
it. When he played football at school, he would never wear his new shoes. He
insisted on wearing some old, worn-out shoes.
From Ted Embry, Children’s Homes Director
in Northeastern Alabama:
. . .There was the time we took gifts to a
family on Christmas morning. The house showed years of neglect. We saw
desperation in the eyes of the children. Yet, when they saw the gifts we
brought, their little eyes lit up.
. . .One little boy in our care made his
Christmas list and everyday before Christmas he made changes. It wasn't long
until his Wish List looked tattered and worn.
. . .Candy and small toys are carefully
separated and each piece of candy is counted so every child is treated the
same. Don't think for a moment that children don't count the number of gifts
or pieces of candy they receive. Christmas is one of those important times
when a child can feel he or she is just as important as anyone else, though
often the child may not feel as worthy." |
