View of Children’s
Homes as mission field prompts
gift from Fairfield church
Message from Rev. Frank Posey, Pastor,
First Baptist Church of Fairfield, Alabama
“Probably six or seven years ago, I had picked
up Jimmy Stewart, the chairman of our deacons, to attend a regular deacons’
meeting. While riding down the interstate, we talked about the possibility
of our church closing. One of us, I don’t remember which one, asked, ‘Why
not give it to Alabama Baptist Children’s Homes?’ We both talked about it
but did not mention it to the deacons.
“One or two years passed and I buried Jimmy. After he died, I began to drop
a few hints here and there to allow the idea to catch on. One day, I called
our chairman of deacons, V.D. Rodgerson, and asked if I could come to his
home for some thoughts I had. His response was ‘yes.’ I carefully laid out
the plan to him about what we needed to do in the event the church closes.
He liked the idea and we presented it to the deacons in a regular meeting.
Right: Paul Miller, Children’s Homes
executive director, accepts keys to First Baptist Church of Fairfield from
Pastor Frank Posey at the church’s final Sunday service on Dec. 18, 2005.
“The wording of the resolution said, ‘If and when the Fairfield First
Baptist Church closes, it will be given to Alabama Baptist Children’s Homes.
They will sell the building and invest the revenue received in the Alabama
Baptist Children’s Homes ministry.’

From Reverend Bill Anderson, former member of Fairfield First Baptist
Church:
“I am optimistic that the Gospel will still
continue to be shared from this corner [the property Fairfield First Baptist
has given to Alabama Baptist Children’s Homes.]”
“On September 17, 2005, the deacons presented the resolution to the church
in its regular business session. It passed unanimously.
“This church has always believed in missions. When it was at its highest
peak, she started seven missions. We have always given generously to all of
our Southern Baptist Convention mission programs.
“It has been the joy and pleasure of my wife, Lou, and me to serve in this
loving fellowship. In fact, this church has been the most loving church that
we have served.
“Two songs that express this love are ‘The Family of God’ and “To God Be the
Glory.’ Without His guidance, it would have been impossible to continue as
long as we have.
“We appreciate what Alabama Baptist Children’s Homes is doing. We have
enjoyed working with its administrative personnel. We hope that our
contribution will be a help to the future ministries of the Children’s
Homes.” |
