Mothers are helped when they're unable to meet the needs of their dependent children, yet separation from the parent is not in the best interest of the children. The primary goal is to serve families with potential for positive change.

Services of Family Care include:

  • Temporary homes in Alabaster and Mobile for mothers with dependent children;
  • Group living setting with resident staff supervision;
  • Modeling of appropriate living skills to create a healing and healthy environment;
  • Professional counseling provided for each mother and/or child as needed;
  • Staff assist, but don't assume, each mother's responsibilities. She is responsible for the care and discipline of her own children, and she is required to cook and clean;
  • Each mother is required to secure and maintain steady employment, and she is required to maintain a budget and help pay daily living expenses. Thirty percent of every paycheck goes to savings;
  • Each mother is encouraged and is provided opportunities for spiritual growth;
  • At the end of the first three months of residence, discharge plans are initiated.

    At its core, the Family Care program of Alabama Baptist Children's Homes today in Alabaster and Mobile is an outgrowth of the Mother's Aid program started at the Children's Homes in the 1920s under the leadership of then-Executive Director J.O. Colley. The Children's Homes recognized, and still does, the importance of keeping the child(ren) with the mother if at all possible.
